Минеј месечни (од μηναιον - месец) садржи променљиве молитве за сваки дан у години, по датумима сваког месеца, за непокретне празнике (то јест такве који долазе увек
одређеног дана у одређеном месецу). Стога се месечни минеј, у складу са бројем месеци у години, састоји од дванаест књига. На крају сваке књиге штампају се посебне
богородичне васкрсне песме, или тзв. догматици, богородичне васкрсне које се пјевају после стихира на стиховње, богородичне које се певају "када има 'Слава' светоме у
Минеју"; затим отпуститељни богородични које се пјевају после тропара у недељне и празничне дане, и богородични отпуститељни које се пјевају обичним данима после
тропара.
Осим месечног Минеја постоји још и такозвани Минеј празнични, или "Антологион", или "Трефологион", "Цветослов", који садржи службе изабране из месечног Минеја за Господње,
Богородичине и нарочито поштоване празнике у част неких светих.
Општи Минеј садржи променљиве молитве не за сваког светог посебно, као месечни Минеј, него за сваки збор светих одвојено, на пример, општа служба за апостоле, мученике,
светитеље итд. Осим служби светима он такође садржи општи поредак празника Господњих, Богородичиних, крсту, анђелима, претечи и саборима.
Општи Минеј има двојаку употребу; као прво, он је неопходан уз месечни Минеј, када треба да се обави служба оним светима за које није написана посебна служба у месечном
Минеју; као друго, у сиромашним црквама, где нема читавог комплета богослужбених књига, општи Минеј служи као замена за дванаест томова месечног Минеја.
